Nehemiah lived in the world of politics. He was a high ranking worker in the government of Babylon. His official title was cupbearer for King Artazerzes. He would be considered the modern-day U.S. Secret Service agent who made sure the King was safe from being poisoned.

Today, as "ministers in the marketplace", we are faced daily with stark choices - whether to work God's way, and make Godly decisions based on excellence and integrity, or to work the world's way, and bow to expediency and compromise - the "short cut to a quick buck". This tension is unrelenting and ubiquitous - the temptation is always there, and we have a never-ending battle to do things the right way for the right reasons - God's way.

What exactly does favor do? Favor is the affection of God towards you that releases an influence through you so that other people are inclined to like, trust and cooperate with you.

The oldest book of the Old Testament is Job. As such it is the first real insight into favor and how it operates. In the very first chapter we read about the phenomenal blessing that is on Job's life, declaring: "This man was the greatest of all the men of the East" (Job 1:3).

He didn't begin this job until he was sixty-nine years old. He had already had a successful Hollywood movie career and decided to try his hand at politics. He would be known by one job more than any other. He would also be known as one of the United State's greatest statesmen. He had a faith that was genuine but not intruding or very public, but you knew where he stood. He always treated people, even his detractors with grace. He was known for his extraordinary love he had for his wife.

The faith at work movement is now entering a new phase of expression. However, to understand this new phase it is helpful to review the history of this movement. In the 1930s CBMC began with a focus of evangelism white collar executives. This continue for several years with the birth of Full Gospel Businessmen's Fellowship International and groups like Executive Ministries of Campus Crusade and many other groups.

God does not have a sense of indebtedness to us. In Psalm 50, His viewpoint on the issue of ownership is stated rather clearly -- God owns everything. Yet, many of us seem to spend our lifetimes striving for things to "own," and once we get them, we are determined to protect what we have and accumulate more. This kind of striving always brings with it concern about how to keep what we have, or how to protect it from others who may want it. Psalm 50 gives us one of the definitive statements of real ownership in Scripture. This statement reveals the Kingdom perspective.

In many cultures, witchcraft seems to be a particular problem in the marketplace. Business people go to the Witch Doctor to attract business or to curse the competition. Some business people are known to use a fetish to bring success. In Zambia, there is a root called "Palibe Kantu" (meaning 'No Problem') to influence customers in their stores to prevent them from noticing flaws in the products. Other fetishes are used to attract business to the shop. The Christian businessperson should have nothing to do with such practices. Scripture prohibits them. Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. (Deuteronomy 18:10-11). (See also Leviticus 17:7 and 19:26.)

A business is a tool to be used by God to demonstrate the truth of the Gospel. In James 1:22 we are told to be "doers" of the Word. A business is the perfect environment for living Christ's truth.

If I were to ask you to describe the core attributes of a person who exemplifies God's ideal for a Christian in the workplace, what would you say? This is the most common question I get from the secular media.
Over the past several years, I have observed four key qualities exhibited by workplace believers who are transforming their workplaces for Christ. I believe these attributes are God's ideal for the Spirit-led worker today. Let's take a look at them.
